Moeve and Air Nostrum, pioneers in the use of sustainable fuel (SAF) at Melilla Airport
13 DEC 2024
- During October and November, the energy company supplied 30% SAF to all flights departing from this airport, all operated by the Valencian airline, as part of both companies' commitment to decarbonizing the airline sector
- The supply of SAF represents a 15-fold increase in the EU requirement for airlines, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025 (2% SAF), and which will progressively increase to 70% by 2050
- Moeve produces this SAF at its La Rábida Energy Park (Huelva) from used cooking oil. The company already supplies SAF to Spain's main airports
- Air Nostrum, in a determined commitment to promoting sustainability in Melilla, refueled 60,000 liters of SAF in the last quarter of 2024
- SAF can reduce CO2 emissions throughout its lifecycle by up to 90% compared to traditional kerosene
Moeve continues to drive its commitment to the decarbonization of the aviation sector by supplying sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Air Nostrum at Melilla Airport. The energy company thus becomes the first company to offer this biofuel in the autonomous city, as it recently did at airports in the Canary Islands.
Specifically, Moeve has supplied 30% of SAF to all flights departing from this airport, all of which are operated by Air Nostrum. Thus, flights departing from Melilla Airport during October and November loaded their tanks with fuel up to 15 times more than the amount established by the European "ReFuelEU Aviation" regulation for 2025 (set at least 2%). Meanwhile, Exolum, the storage operator at Melilla Airport, has guaranteed supply management, an essential logistical component to ensure that sustainable fuels reach airlines.
SAF, produced by Moeve at its La Rábida Energy Park (Huelva) from used cooking oil, is a second-generation biofuel that can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% over its entire life cycle, compared to traditional kerosene.
Marta Cencillo, Head of Sustainable Aviation at Moeve, stated: "We are proud to be the first company to supply SAF in Melilla. This new milestone reinforces our commitment to the decarbonization of the aviation sector, especially in areas that are difficult to access from the Peninsula, such as Melilla, where air connections play a key role. This boost is essential for SAF to reach the various Spanish airports. As one of the main manufacturers and suppliers of this biofuel in Spain, we already supply it permanently to the country's main airports."
For her part, Mª José Sanz Miguel, Director of Quality, Environment, and Emergencies at Air Nostrum, emphasized: “At Air Nostrum, we are firmly committed to SAF as a lever for decarbonization in the aeronautical sector. So much so that our commitment for 2030 is to consume 10% of this sustainable fuel, a percentage that is almost double the percentage required by the European mandate for ‘ReFuelEU Aviation.’ And to continue advancing this commitment, we have chosen Melilla to carry out this environmental initiative, also demonstrating our responsibility to the people of Melilla. The planes that refueled at Melilla Airport in October and November loaded 30% with fuel from certified sustainable sources, which significantly reduces their carbon footprint thanks to the emissions savings enabled by SAF.”
Investing in SAF to decarbonize the aviation sector
To guarantee the supply of SAF to its customers, Moeve, together with its partners, is developing the largest second-generation biofuel production complex in Southern Europe, which will have a production capacity of one million tons of SAF and renewable diesel. With this project, the company advances toward its goal of leading the production of 2G biofuels in Spain and Portugal, with an annual production capacity of 2.5 million tons of biofuels by 2030, of which 800,000 tons will be SAF, enough to fly around the planet 2,000 times.
This initiative, developed by Moeve and Air Nostrum in Melilla, supports several of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda: SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
In its ecological transition plan, Air Nostrum is betting on SAF as a lever for decarbonization, committing to using 10% SAF by 2030, almost doubling the requirements of the European mandate. Along with the progressive increase in SAF consumption, fuel savings through Big Data algorithms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning improve operational efficiency.
Moeve is an international company with more than 11,000 employees, committed to sustainable energy and mobility. Its ambition is to be one of the drivers of the energy transition in Europe and accelerate its decarbonization and that of its customers.
After more than 90 years as a benchmark in the energy sector like Cepsa, in October 2024 it launched its new brand, Moeve, which reflects the acceleration of its transformation to lead the production of sustainable energies based on green molecules, such as green hydrogen and second-generation biofuels, and the production of sustainable chemical products. The company is also developing an extensive ultra-fast electric charging network in Spain and Portugal to boost sustainable mobility.
Through its 2030 strategic plan, Positive Motion, Moeve is working to transform mobility and energy to improve the world, ensuring today's energy supply while focusing on facilitating the sustainable energy of the future.
Air Nostrum is the leading regional aviation company in Spain and one of the largest European airlines of its kind. It operates for the Iberia Group under the Iberia Regional Air Nostrum brand. It connects 59 destinations in eight countries across Europe and North Africa with its fleet of 46 next-generation aircraft. It has 1,500 employees. In its 29-year history, it has transported more than 100 million passengers.
